How's it going Poland: Part 2

So continuing from my previous post which was getting a tad tooooo long.  We were headed then towards Zielona Gora, which we camped halfway between Gorzów Wielkopolski and Z. Gora.  As usual, we either passed by small villages with Sklep (convenience store) forests or farms with strong scent of horse manure.  Real motivation to cycle pass those.

As we went south passing by Międzyrzecz and Swiebodzin we saw this big statue of Jesus.  They say it was the biggest statue of Jesus in the world until they built a bigger one somewhere else (someone can comment on this?)

As the name suggested, Zeilona Gora, which means Green mountain is really surrounded by a few steep hills.  We met Michal, a budding games developer who was to be our couchsurf-host there.  He had two cool bean bags for couches which I really loved as it was really unconventional and blue (my favourite colour :P)  Anyway, he brought us strolling along the city center and telling us about the wine (Bacchus) festival that was to be held in September which we will definitely miss.  There was also an archeological dig site of an old wine cellar in the middle of the city which just reinforces the notion that the city really loved wine since a long time ago.  We had a beer-cum-polish language session together with Michal's friend in the local pub.  Nice night indeed.

The next day, we did a short trip south west to Żagań, to see the palace and the nice town around it.  We got wrong directions to the palace where we were supposed to meet Michal from the local taxi driver who actually led us to the cemetary.  Michal was nice enough to meet us there instead.  He lives in a house in the suburbs with a big garden where let us stay in the attic with a few skylights, which otherwise was quite empty.  The next day, he showed us around town and the palace in his car together with his girlfriend.  We stayed an extra night there and I cooked some chicken curry using ingredients I found in the local Lidl store.

Tomorrow, we head further south-west towards the German border town of Görlitz which is actually split into two parts, the other called Zgorzelec in Poland.

Pictures will come soon.
